Changing the ribbon on your IDP Smart-51 ID card printer is a straightforward process once you know the steps. Replacing the ribbon correctly ensures optimal print quality and helps keep your printer running smoothly. Follow this step-by-step guide to replace the ribbon safely and properly.

Step 1: Open the Printer Lid

Press down on the lid release tab and lift the lid to open your printer.

Step 2: Remove the Old Ribbon

Grasp the ribbon carefully and remove it from the printer, being sure not to touch the printhead. The ribbon spindles will flick out from one side, allowing you to lift the ribbon out.

Step 3: Wind Used Ribbon onto the Take-Up Spindle

Roll any remaining used ribbon onto the take-up spindle. This spindle is clearly labeled on the cassette itself, making it easy to identify.

Step 4: Insert the New Ribbon

Take your new ribbon and align the spindles as shown on the cassette. Press the spindles into place until you hear a click, which ensures they are securely installed.

Step 5: Replace the Ribbon Cassette

Place the cassette back into the printer, making sure the part labeled “TOP” is facing upward and positioned at the front of the printer.

Step 6: Close the Printer Lid

Lower the printer lid down and press until you hear a click, confirming it is securely closed.
